Norway’s Equinor applies for lower Visund gas permit

Norwegian state-controlled Equinor has applied for a lower production quota at the Visund field for the 2026-27 gas year, based on documents seen by Argus.

Equinor has applied to produce 4.62bn m³ from Visund in October 2026-October 2027, or just under 12.7mn m³/d. This corresponds to 4.36bn m³ of sales gas after excluding the gas that is lost through shrinkage, Equinor said.

Equinor had approval for a higher Visund production permit of 4.97bn m³ for the 2025-26 gas year.

Equinor notes that in the national budget for this year, the projection for Visund's gas production for sale is lower at 3.48bn m³ for the 2026-27 gas year, or 10.1mn m³/d. Equinor is asking for a permit around 25pc higher than the expected production.

The national budget has a high-case scenario for Visund's gas sales at 4.08bn m³, or 11.2mn m³/d — still around 6pc below the permit it has requested.

The requested higher volume accounts for an upside in the gas potential of new and existing wells, Equinor said. And it would be possible to produce the entire requested permit volume without significantly affecting the ultimate oil and gas reserves, it said.

Output from Visund averaged 13.8mn m³/d in October-December 2025, totalling 1.27bn m³, the latest available Norwegian offshore directorate (NOD) data show. Production would need to average 13.6mn m³/d over the remainder of the gas year for the field to produce in line with the 2025-26 permit.

Visund's production was 4.97bn m³ in the 2024-25 gas year, up from a three-year low of 4.45bn m³ in 2023-24.

Alongside the permit application, Equinor also submitted a four-year drilling plan. The drilling plan mainly focuses on interventions, injector work and maintenance rather than new gas wells that would support the low-pressure production system, which is the main driver behind higher potential gas volumes.

Equinor introduced low-pressure production at Visund in summer 2024. The strategy for Visund is to maintain reservoir pressure within drilling limits and optimise oil recovery, while increasing gas exports, the NOD said in late December.
