The US and Iran have agreed to allow neutral ships stranded in the Mideast Gulf since February to depart through the strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump said on Sunday.

Trump, in a social media post, said that this would affect ships "from areas of the World that are not in any way involved with that which is currently taking place in the Middle East". He claimed to have secured Tehran's consent for the ship transit but threatened retaliation if the effort "is interfered with". Trump described it as a "Humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran".

In Trump's words, the US would escort the stranded ships, which, he said, "will not be returning until the area becomes safe for navigation, and everything else".

Trump dubbed the departure of stranded vessels "Project Freedom", which he said "will begin Monday morning, Middle East time".

More than 700 vessels were caught in the Mideast Gulf after the US and Israel attacked Iran on 28 February and Iran retaliated by severely restricting navigation through Hormuz. As of mid-April, there were 120 fully laden tankers trapped inside the Gulf.

Tehran did not immediate comment on Trump's post.

Trump also said that US-Iran negotiations have continued and that "these discussions could lead to something very positive for all".

But he told reporters over the weekend that Iran had submitted a peace proposal to the US and that he was not satisfied with it.

Hormuz has remained largely closed to navigation for almost two months. The US since 13 April has been forcing vessels departing Iranian ports to turn back.
