Democrats won control of the US Senate and House of Representatives in the midterm elections, in a major rebuke of US president Donald Trump's second term in office.

The House is tilted 228-139 to the Democrats with 68 results yet to be called, according to the Associated Press. US television network NBC is projecting a final result of 259-177. The Senate race is over, as Democrats are up 54-44 with two results to come.

Notably, Texas now has a Democrat as senator after James Talarico (D) ousted Ken Paxton (R), the state's attorney general and Trump ally. NBC projects Jon Rosenthal (D) will be the new head of the Texas Railroad Commission, the state agency that oversees oil and gas drilling.

Democrat control of the House and the Senate means Republicans are unable to pass legislation in party-line votes, as they did with last year's tax and energy bill that sharply reduced clean-energy spending. Winning control of the Senate is even more consequential for Democrats, allowing them to block contested nominees, including any potential openings on the US Supreme Court.

"I wasn't on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE," said Trump on his Truth Social platform. He also posted an image of a red cap with VETO written on it, suggesting he intends to use his presidential powers to continue with his agenda, even in the absence of Congressional control.
