Singapore, 28 April (Argus) — Dubai international airport saw passenger and freight traffic rise in March against a year previously, continuing a trend of growth in the Mideast Gulf aviation market that has supported jet fuel demand.

Passenger numbers rose 21.8pc to 3.97mn, up from 3.26mn a year previously, according to data from Dubai Airports. Total aircraft movements also saw a 9.6pc rise, pointing to increased load factors.

Passenger traffic through Dubai in the first quarter of the year grew by 20.4pc, while cargo volumes increased 26.4pc. The growth follows a recovering trend in the global economy and especially Asia, reflected in the 13.2pc growth in international passenger numbers for the same period, preliminary figures by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines showed.

Air cargo traffic through Dubai in March rose 21.9pc to 194,100t from a year earlier, while aircraft movements increased 6.4pc during the same period to lift cargo load factors.

“Operational disruptions because of European airspace closures will have an impact on April's traffic results, but the strong surge of traffic created as airlines clear the backlog across their networks will go a long way in making up the difference,” said Dubai Airports chief executive Paul Griffiths.
