China, US, India’s car sales on the rise

Singapore, 25 February (Argus) — Chinese passenger car sales grew in January at their slowest pace since last July, but still posted double-digit growth and rose to a record high. India posted faster sales growth, although the volume remained little more than a tenth of Chinese sales. US car sales rose at their fastest pace since September, while European car sales showed their smallest contraction in 10 months.

Chinese car sales in January rose 16.7pc from a year earlier to 1.53mn, according to the country's association of automobile manufacturers. The slowdown in sales growth, from 18.6pc in December and 29.3pc in November, followed the government's withdrawal of several sales incentives and moves by Beijing to control traffic congestion.

A Chinese car sales tax reverted to its normal 10pc rate from the start of this year for small cars with 1.6 litre engines or smaller. The tax had been lowered over the last two years to boost sales during the global economic slowdown. With the end of that tax benefit dampening the attraction of buying small 1.6 litre engine cars, sales of the vehicles rose 14.7pc, lagging the total passenger car growth rate. Sales of cars with 1.6-2 litre engines also surged 25.7pc.

A car scrappage scheme also ended at the end of 2010, while Beijing said it would limit the number of total new car licences in the capital to 240,000 this year.

India's car sales rose 26pc in January from a year earlier to 184,332, or the equivalent of 12pc of Chinese sales.

US sales of cars and light vehicles rose 17pc to 819,895, according to automotive consultant Autodata. Sales at General Motors rose 23pc and accounted for 22pc of total sales.

“January was a good month and signalled a solid start to the new year for each of our divisions,” said the vice-president of General Motors' US sales operations, Don Johnson. “Our results were driven by gains across the board in all segments, with our newest models leading the way.”

In Europe, new passenger car registrations eased by 1.4pc in January from a year earlier to 1.04mn. The contraction was the smallest since last March, the last month that new car registrations rose. German car registrations rose 16.5pc to 211,000 in January, after falling 24pc last year. New registrations in France rose 8pc to 185,520, after falling 2.2pc last year. But Spain and Italy saw contractions of more than 20pc.
