Houston, 6 May (Argus) — US corn growers more than doubled their total planting progress last week, but progress is still 35 percentage points behind the five-year average for the 18 top producing states, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

US corn planted over the week ending 5 May rose 7pc from the prior week with 12pc of the crop now sown, the USDA said in today's Crop Progress report.

North Carolina leads all states in corn planting progress with 89pc of its crop sown, though it is still 3pc behind its five-year average pace. Texas is the second-fastest planting state, with 70pc of its corn crop planted, though it only made 1 percentage point of progress in the last week. North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin, whose planting progress has been slowed by late season snow, have only tallied 1pc, 2pc and 4pc planting progress thus far, all at least 22 percentage points behind their respected five-year averages.

An improved two-week weather forecast for the midcontinent led to lower corn prices today. Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) July corn futures contracts preliminarily settled more than 24¢/bushel lower compared to 3 May, while CBOT December contracts preliminary settled around $5.38/bushel, about 15¢/bushel lower than the previous trading day.

USDA reports 2pc of the 18 top soybean producing states' crop was planted over the previous week, which marks the first progress on soybeans this season. Last year at this time, 22pc of US soybeans were in the ground, as dryer conditions allowed for a faster planting pace. The 2008-2012 average soybean planting pace as of 5 May is 12pc. Kentucky has planted 39pc of its soybean crop as of 5 May.

Planting progress in cotton, sugarbeets and rice lag behind recent historical norms, while progress in sorghum and peanuts is only slightly behind 2008-2012 averages.
