Tropical storm Barry heads for Mexico

Houston, 19 June (Argus) — The second tropical storm of the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to make short-lived trip through the southern Gulf of Mexico, avoiding US oil and gas infrastructure, before making landfall in Mexico tomorrow morning, private and federal forecasters said.

Tropical storm Barry formed in the Bay of Campeche this afternoon. It is the second named storm of what forecasters say will be a busy hurricane season.

The storm will pose no threat to US Gulf production as it moves quickly into central Mexico, meteorologists with the private forecasting firm MDA Weather Services said today.

The six-month-long Atlantic season began on June 1. It has already produced tropical storm Andrea — which made landfall in Florida earlier this month but failed to shut-in any oil and gas production during its trek through the Gulf.

This year's Atlantic hurricane season is expected to shutter a median of 46 Bcf (1.3bn m³) of gas output and 19mn bl of oil output from the federal waters of the US Gulf, according to the EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook issued earlier this month. The agency said there is a 58pc chance that shut-ins will be equal to or exceed 2012 storm-related shut-ins of 32 Bcf and 14mn bl.

Energy markets pay close attention to storms that can threaten oil and gas output and infrastructure in the Gulf. The federal waters of the Gulf accounted for 1.27mn b/d of, or 20pc, of US crude production and 4.22 Bcf/d, or 6pc, of marketed gas production last year. The Gulf coast is home to more than 40pc of US refining capacity and 30pc of gas processing capacity.
