The European Energy Exchange (EEX) and the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN), a non-profit organisation established by forested tropical countries, signed a letter of intent to create a market platform for sovereign carbon credits.
The two parties officially joined forces at the UN Cop 27 climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh. The platform will host credits arising from reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+).
Sovereign carbon credits enable countries to receive results-based payments in return for verified actions to conserve and restore tropical forest lands. EEX aims to establish a platform that allows CfRN member countries to connect with global customers in the voluntary carbon market by enabling sales to corporates and institutional investors.
