German CAN imports fall in May after busy April

Germany's imports of CAN fell by 39pc year on year in May, after concerns relating to Covid-19 had helped to increase intake in April.

Imports rose by 55pc on the year to 282,000t in April, as large-scale buyers scrambled to acquire product for the key spring season, concerned that lockdown measures could eventually lead to logistical problems.

An improvement in weather conditions for agricultural work also helped to boost April imports.

Subsequent demand was accordingly reduced, and Germany's May imports of CAN fell by 39pc on the year to 187,000t, according to GTT data.

Combined imports from Belgium and the Netherlands — home to output from major producers Yara, OCI, and Eurochem — totalled 75,000t in May, down by 42pc year on year.

Imports from Poland fell by 27pc to 23,000t, while intake from the Czech Republic dropped by 41pc to 21,000t.

Imports from Lithuania, Slovakia and Austria were also down on the year in May.

German CAN imports in the first 11 months of the 2019-20 European agricultural year — July-May — reached 1.6mn t, down by 2pc on the corresponding period of 2018-19.
