Gas to play role in Tasmania’s renewable energy target

The Tasmanian state government still sees a role for gas in its plans for a big expansion in renewable energy output by 2040, after introducing legislation in the state parliament yesterday.

Tasmania has set a target for electricity output to double from 2022 levels and for all of it to be powered by renewables by 2040, through its Energy Coordination and Planning Amendment (Tasmanian Renewable Energy Target (TRET)) Bill 2020. It sees gas providing back-up power to solar and wind projects, as well as being used for household heating and industrial purposes.

The state is on track to achieve 100pc of its electricity from renewable sources by 2022 and the new bill is aimed at doubling the island state's electricity over the next 20 years, with the excess power to be exported to the mainland via a second interconnection transmission line to Victoria, known as the Marinus Link.

The TRET is equivalent to 21,000GWh of electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2040. The state government has also set an interim target of 15,750GWh of electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2030, up from a planned 10,500GWh in 2022, the ruling Liberal party state government said.

Tasmania is the smallest gas-consuming state in Australia, with consumption averaging 22 TJ/d (587,000 m³) in the 2019-20 fiscal year to 30 June or 1.4pc of the daily average for eastern Australia.

Tasmania is planning a hydropower storage project of up 4,800MW, known as the Battery of the Nation, with electricity from the new capacity to be mainly exported to other states in eastern Australia. Tasmania has one gas-fired power station, the 386MW Tamar Valley gas plant.
