Japanese utility Kansai Electric Power and RWE Renewables, a subsidiary of German utility RWE, have agreed to jointly study the feasibility of a large-scale floating offshore wind power project off the coast of Japan.

The deal is aimed at tapping an expected rise in demand for wind power energy in Japan, where 45GW of offshore wind power capacity is planned to be installed by 2040, ahead of the country's 2050 target to achieve carbon neutrality. But details are still unclear, including potential areas and the targeted output capacity.

Kansai plans to develop more than 2GW of renewable energy sources to achieve a goal of 6GW installed capacity in Japan and overseas by the 2030s. The company is promoting the development of offshore wind power projects in Akita, Yamagata and Nagasaki prefectures.

Kansai has also been involved in two offshore wind power projects in Europe, including one in collaboration with RWE.
