Brazilian state-controlled Petrobras completed the R61mn ($10.7mn) sale of three thermoelectric plants in Bahia state to local power generator Sao Francisco Energia.

The three power plants — Arembepe, Bahia 1 and Muricy — have a total installed capacity of 329MW and currently use fuel oil as feedstock, Petrobras said. All three have the potential to be converted to natural gas.

The Arembepe and Muricy plants already have power supply contracts set through December 2023, while the Bahia 1 plant has a contract that extends through December 2025.

The sale marks another step forward in the company's divestment strategy.

The three powerplants are currently being dispatched by the grid operator at a cost of R1,488.90/MWh for Bahia 1 and R1,834.27/MWh for Arembepe and Muricy.

The most severe drought faced by Brazil in at least 91 years has led the country to increase thermal generation in 2021. Thermal generation makes up 22pc of the generation matrix and fuel oil accounts for 8pc of the thermal share. Natural gas accounts for 25pc of all thermal generation.
