The first of two floating LNG-fueled power generation systems, which Brazil contracted with during its emergency power auction late last year, has started sailing towards the country.
The ship left Singapore on 22 March, stopping at different African ports over 10-30 April, and is expected to arrive in Brazil by 15 May, according to data from maritime vessel tracker Fleetmon.
Turkish energy company Karpowership owns both ships Brazil hired, which have the capacity of generating 370MW. The electricity is to be delivered to Rio de Janeiro state, on the country's southern coast.
The ships did not start operating at the official start of their contracts, on 1 May, and are scheduled to come online on 1 August, the deadline under the auction terms. The projects have faced pushback from local environmental protection organizations, because they were authorized by the state without an environmental impact study. Rio de Janeiro's Prosecution Office recommended the state's environmental agency revoke their license.
