Brazil’s off-grid subsidies will cost R5.4bn

Brazil's electricity regulator Aneel estimates that tariff subsidies for distributed generation projects will cost R5.4bn ($1bn) in 2023.

Of the total, R1.4bn will be paid directly by regulated power consumers. Free and captive markets will share the remaining R4bn.

Aneel will hold a public consultation regarding the financial aspects of the 2021 law that regulated the distributed generation sector. The proposal under comment suggests the creation of an expense item inside the government's energy development fund (CDE) that would outline the R1.4bn in distribution and transmission subsidies for distributed generation.

The item aims to address a section of the law establishing that captive consumers would pay for subsidies of distributors with less than 700MW capacity and new distributed generation clients. The remaining R4bn corresponds to projects bigger than 700MW.

The public consultation will run from 27 October-12 December. Comments can be sent via email.
