Romania's OMV Petrom hails largest oil find in decades

Romania's OMV Petrom said it has made a series of oil and gas discoveries in southern Romania including its largest crude find "in decades". The discoveries could help the firm reduce the decline in its upstream production and increase the intake of domestic crude at its 85,000 b/d Petrobrazi refinery in Ploiesti.

OMV Petrom said it drilled and tested three exploration wells in the Oltenia and Muntenia regions between June last year and April this year as part of a €20mn drilling programme. The wells yielded discoveries estimated to hold more than 30mn bl of oil equivalent (boe) of recoverable resources combined, which is equivalent to around 75pc of OMV Petrom's oil and gas production in 2022.

The discoveries include around 20mn bl of oil in the Verguleasa exploration area, which the company said is its biggest oil find in decades, and a further 6mn bl of oil in the Targoviste block. Crude output at Verguleasa could start relatively quickly as the discovery there is located near an existing production area, while preparations are underway for pre-exploitation work at Targoviste, the firm said.

The third discovery is a natural gas find in the Targu Jiu exploration block, estimated to contain 7mn boe. This is equivalent to almost a third of Romania's total gas output in 2022. OMV Petrom plans to drill a follow-up well in the block next year and has already started preparations for a tie-in.

The company has not disclosed how much each project might produce but it said the discoveries "will contribute to reducing the decline of our production and to the continuity of the supply of essential products for the economy". The new onshore discoveries will complement the Neptun Deep gas project in the Romanian section of the Black Sea, which OMV Petrom expects to take a final investment decision on in the middle of this year.

The firm's upstream oil and gas output has fallen in recent years due to natural decline and the sale of marginal fields. Excluding any further potential divestments, it expects its total production to drop by 8pc to around 110,000 boe/d this year, from 119,100 boe/d last year. Besides its Romanian assets, the company also has offshore exploration acreage in Bulgaria and Georgia.

OMV Petrom processes its domestic crude along with imported feedstock at the Petrobrazi refinery, where throughput of crude and semi-finished products fell to 1.15mn t in January-March from 1.16mn a year earlier. The refinery started a six-week turnaround in late April.

OMV Petrom is majority owned by Austrian integrated oil and gas firm OMV.
