Keurig Dr Pepper continues reducing emissions

US beverage company Keurig Dr Pepper increased its use of renewable energy last year, helping to drive further reductions in its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The company in 2022 received 74pc of its electricity from renewables, up by 12 percentage points from the previous year, according to its latest sustainability report.

Keurig Dr Pepper from 2020-22 sourced its renewable electricity through a mix of Green-e certified renewable energy certificate (REC) products. The company used more than 1.9mn MWh of total electricity from all sources last year.

The increase in renewable energy, along with energy efficiency improvements, helped the company lower its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 13pc, compared with 9pc in 2021.

The two categories cover GHGs from direct operations and power purchases and totalled about 355,000 metric tonnes last year.

Keurig Dr Pepper also became the first buyer of carbon credits from ECOTIERRA's Pivot Forestry Project, which will offset the entirety of its Canadian Scope 1 mobile emissions. The company declined to disclose the number of offsets.

The company is aiming to achieve 100pc renewable energy use by 2025. The company also has set goals to cut its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30pc from a 2018 baseline by 2030, along with a 15pc reduction in "select categories" of its scope 3 GHGs, including purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, and the transportation and use of sold products.

The company in 2022 reached a 5pc reduction in scope 3 emissions from those select categories. But its reported scope 3 emissions, which account for about 20pc of Keurig Dr Pepper's full GHGs from the category, rose by more than 8pc to almost 10.9mn t.

Scope 3 emissions account for GHGs across a company's entire value chain.

Keurig Dr Pepper is targeting net-zero emissions by 2050 with plans to reduce 90pc of its scope 1-3 emissions and use carbon offsets to cover the remaining GHGs.
