Japanese power wholesaler Joban Joint Power has restarted the 600MW No.9 coal-fired generation unit at its Nakoso power plant in northeast Japan's Fukushima prefecture following a two-week shutdown.

Joban, a joint venture between domestic utilities Tohoku Electric Power and Jera, resumed the No.9 unit on 29 July after it completed repairs on a damaged fuel oil burner. The unit was forced to shut on 16 July because of the failure of the fuel oil burner.

Japan has been experiencing hot and humid weather since the end of June, which has boosted electricity use across the country, but the impact has been limited because of sufficient power supply. The electricity reserve level in the Tohoku area was more than 17pc at 14:30-15:00 Japan time (05:30-06:00 GMT) on 31 July, well above the ideal level of 8pc. Power supply is more ample in Japan's west Kansai area where additional supply is available, especially after the Takahama No.1 reactor was reactivated on 28 July.

Japan's total power demand during 24-30 July averaged 101GW, up by 7pc from the previous week, data from the Organization for Cross-regional Co-ordination of Transmission Operators shows.

Japan plans to add around 400MW of thermal capacity during the week to 6 August, with the addition of 1GW outstripping the closure of 600MW, according to Argus' survey based on a notice by the Japan Electric Power Exchange. The difference incorporates the net increase in coal-fed capacity of 700MW and the net drop in gas-fed capacity of 300MW this week.
