Finnish day-ahead power at five-month high

Finland day-ahead power for delivery on 18 August increased more than sixfold from the previous day to settle at its highest price since March on lower import capacity from Sweden and forecasts of lower wind output.

The Finnish day-ahead spot index for delivery on Friday settled at €118.52/MWh — well above the previous clearing price of €17.30/MWh for delivery on 17 August. The spot settled €123.08/MWh above the yearly low last week, of minus €4.56/MWh on 8 August, and 21pc below the 2023 high of €150.51/MWh from 6 March (see day-ahead pricing chart).

Hourly prices rose to as high as €270.45/MWh for 08:00-09:00 delivery, falling to as low as €14.39-15.61/MWh over the 22:00-00:00 delivery period, with prices above €100/MWh for about 58pc of Friday.

Power prices surged as electricity prices settled at parity with neighbouring Estonia — where the spot also settled at €118.52/MWh and with hourly prices increasing to as high €270.45/MWh. Finnish power prices are typically at a wide discount to Estonia owing to high renewable and nuclear generation in the former country.

Forecasts suggest wind generation in Finland on Friday will be at a load factor of just 9pc, or 535MW, compared with the forecast for today of a 24pc load factor, or 1.37GW. Onshore wind availability in Finland has also been lowered during an outage at the 192MW Lappfjard wind plant, which was disconnected on 14 August for about nine days.

Power exports from Finland to Estonia are scheduled at 614MW on 18 August, with no flows scheduled in the other direction. This is down from scheduled net exports of 916MW on 17 August, while Finland was a net exporter to Estonia in July and June at 969MW and 731MW, respectively.

Scheduled border flows from Sweden's SE3 and SE1 bidding zones — which settled at averages of €21.59/MWh for Friday — to Finland have been limited as a result of the 400MW unplanned curtailment of the 1.2GW FI-SE3 interconnector on 2-21 August, while the 1.3GW planned curtailment of the 1.5GW SE1-FI power link on 14 August will continue to 17 September, limiting capacity between the two countries by 1.7GW.

Prices could be supported in the short term because of the scheduled maintenance of the 507MW unit 2 Loviisa nuclear reactor on 20 August-6 September. However, Finnish hydropower stocks ended week 32 of this year at 4.1TWh, which was their highest since week 28 of 2021. Wind is also expected to pick up from 21-23 August to load factors of 12-27pc over the period.
