Brazil will begin exporting bone-in beef, beef offals, meat products and derivatives to Indonesia after signing an agreement this week, according to agriculture and cattle raising ministry (Mapa).
Indonesia imported 11,400 metric tonnes (t) of beef from Brazil in 2024, accounting for less than 0.5pc of Brazil's beef exports last year, according to Mdic.
Demand for beef imports in the Asian country increased after the Indonesian government lifted quota restrictions on live cattle importsin mid-June to secure supplies of meat and milk, according to Indonesia's agriculture ministry. The country plans to import 250,000 head of cattle this year, with plans to purchase 2mn live head of cattle over the next five years.
Indonesians spent $4.2bn on Brazilian agricultural products last year, mostly sugarcane-based products, soy and fibers, according to Mapa.
Brazil's frozen and chilled beef exports increased by almost 17pc to 276,880t in July from a year earlier, according to Brazilian industry and trade ministry Mdic.
Brazil has reached 402 agreements to export agriculture and cattle products since 2023, according to Mapa.
Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, with 283.5mn inhabitants, according to World Bank data from 2024.
