The Federal Court of Australia has dismissed an application by activists to invalidate Australian independent Woodside Energy's environmental plan (EP) for the Scarborough gas project offshore the state of Western Australia (WA).

Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) had appealed against the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Authority's (Nopsema) approval of the EP for Scarborough, which will produce about 8mn t/yr of LNG from 2026.

Any application for costs must be made within seven days, Justice McElwaine said on 22 August. Resolution of the matter was welcomed by Woodside which said the project will be one of the lowest carbon intensity sources of LNG delivered into north Asia.

DEA cited "the global climate emergency" in its application filed earlier this year, claiming Nopsema approved Woodside's documents without knowing how the environmental impacts will be managed and seeking judicial review of the EP.

The EP formed the final approval required for Woodside to connect its floating production unit to the pipeline linking it to the 4.9mn t/yr Pluto LNG terminal, where it is building a second 5mn t/yr train due online in July-December next year.
