US’ EQT plans to add LNG regasification capacity

US natural gas producer EQT is not seeking any additional offtake volumes for its 6.5mn t/yr LNG portfolio but anticipates it will sign deals for regasification capacity in international markets.

EQT, the second-largest US gas producer by volume, concluded a spree of offtake deals totaling 4.5mn t/yr with proposed US LNG projects in late August and early September. Those agreements came on top of a 2mn t/yr tolling agreement signed in July 2024.

"Our bucket is full now," chief executive Toby Rice said on Wednesday. "I wouldn't anticipate we sign anything else near term."

But the company expects to sign deals for sales agreements and regasification capacity in overseas markets, part of a "direct-to-consumer approach" for a large portion of its LNG portfolio, chief financial officer Jeremy Knop said.

EQT intentionally built its LNG portfolio tied to projects that will begin production after what the company expects to be a global LNG oversupply from 2027-2029. This period should slow the addition of other liquefaction projects and entice new international demand with lower prices, Knop said.

Knop also detailed EQT's strategy for geographical diversification in its LNG agreements. The company's lone tolling arrangement — with Glenfarne's proposed 4mn t/yr Texas LNG facility in south Texas — is viable because the vast availability of long-term Permian basin gas from west Texas makes it easier to secure the feedstock, he said.

EQT opted for offtake agreements — in which the LNG terminal acquires the gas for liquefaction — on projects closer to the Haynesville shale in Louisiana due to concerns about long-term gas supply in the region.
