US coal-fired generation extended gains from year-earlier levels in September, taking much of its incremental market share from natural gas.

US generators dispatched 58.4mn MWh of coal power from utility scale facilities during the month, a 7.1pc increase from September 2024, according to the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA) Electric Power Monthly report on Tuesday.

September was the 10th straight month that coal generation in the US exceeded year-earlier levels. For January-September, coal power from utility scale facilities climbed to 561.9mn MWh from 497.5mn MWh in the first nine months of 2024.

Similarly, September coal consumption for electricity generation increased by 6.2pc from the same month in 2024 to 33.4mn short tons (30.3mn metric tonnes), and coal burn for January-September climbed by 12pc to 317.6mn st.

The higher coal consumption also helped utility-scale facilities further reduce their coal inventories. By the end of September, US power plants were holding around 105.4mn st of coal on site, compared with 122.6mn st stockpiled a year earlier, EIA reported.

Coal generation was supported by greater electricity demand. Overall power dispatch was 2.4pc higher in September than a year earlier, rising to 368.1mn MWh during the month.

Coal's portion of the nation's total generation rose to 15.9pc from 15.2pc in September 2024.

Generators operated some coal-fired units at higher capacity rates in September. The capacity factor for utility scale coal power plants increased to 47.9pc from 43.7pc in the same month of 2024.

The greater dependence on coal when compared with September 2024 primarily weighed on natural gas and its dominant share of the US fuel mix. Natural gas made up 45.6pc of the generation dispatched in the US in September, down from 47.2pc a year earlier. Total natural gas-fired generation during the month also fell by 1.1pc on the year to 167.9mn MWh.

The capacity factor for combined cycle natural gas units fell to 66.3pc from 67.6pc, while the factor for steam turbines dipped to 21.3pc from 21.6pc. Capacity factors for other natural gas facilities were slightly higher than a year earlier.

US nuclear power rose to 65.5mn MWh in September from 62.7mn MWh.

And renewable generation excluding hydropower increased by 7.5pc on the year prior to 58.8mh MWh, supported by a 36pc jump in solar power in September. Wind generation declined by 12pc from a year earlier.

US hydroelectric conventional energy also fell during the same period, sliding by 3.7pc to 15.3mn MWh.
