The US and Bangladesh have agreed on a framework for reciprocal trade involving long-term purchases of US energy and agricultural products. The US will also lower its reciprocal tariff on Bangladesh by 1pc.

The framework includes purchases of US energy products valued at about $15bn over 15 years, as well as $3.5bn of US agricultural products, according to a joint statement issued by the White House on 9 February.

Under the framework, Bangladesh will provide expanded market access for US industrial and agricultural goods, including chemicals, medical devices, machinery, information and communications technology products, energy products, soy, dairy, beef, poultry, tree nuts and fruits.

The US will also reduce its reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi goods from 20pc to 19pc.

Bangladesh imported 7.15mn t of LNG in 2025, up from 5.83mn t in 2024, according to data from trade analytics firm Kpler. It usually imports 8-10pc of its LNG from the US.

US developer Argent LNG signed an interim agreement with the government of Bangladesh for up to 5mn t/yr of LNG in January 2025.

Qatar's state-owned QatarEnergy (QE) and US-based LNG firm Excelerate Energy in January 2024 signed a 15-year LNG supply for up to 1mn t/yr to Bangladesh, starting in January 2026.

Bangladesh is expected to increase wheat imports in the July 2025-June 2026 season, with volumes forecast at 6.7mn t, up by 465,000t on the year, according to the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). The government has set a target to import 700,000t of US-origin wheat in the fiscal year, the FAS said.

Both sides also committed to addressing non-tariff barriers. Bangladesh has agreed to accept US motor vehicle safety and emissions standards, recognise approvals by the US Food and Drug Administration for medical devices and pharmaceuticals, and remove import licensing requirements that restrict trade in re-manufactured goods.

The framework will be finalised into a formal agreement following the completion of domestic procedures in both countries.
