Indian private-sector producer Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of Vedanta, plans to spend up to $5bn on partnering with US oil services companies to help develop its homegrown industry, according to chairman Anil Agarwal.

The company also plans to team up with either local or international firms to jointly bid in the OALP-X round in India. "They want to partner and bid together and we will look at that possibility," he said on the sidelines of the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday.

The deadline for bids in the round, which covers 25 exploration blocks, of which 19 are offshore and six onshore, has been extended to the end of May.

Separately, Cairn is deploying new technologies including enhanced oil recovery to shore up output from the Mangala field in Rajasthan, India's largest onshore discovery, Agarwal said. "The work is going on, we had some decline and we have better recovery," he added.

Cairn has a goal of reaching production of 500,000 b/d over the next few years, with offshore making up about 150,000-200,000 b/d of that total and onshore about 300,000 b/d, the chairman said.

And the company sees "huge potential", after starting oil and gas production, from India's northeastern state of Assam, with a goal of reaching output of 100,000 b/d from the project.
