The US and Israel carried out a new round of strikes on Iran's Kharg Island on Tuesday, Iranian state media reported, but the attacks did not hit the island's oil loading facilities.

State-owned Mehr News said "several attacks" were carried out on Kharg Island and that multiple explosions were heard.

Kharg lies about 30km off Iran's coast in the northern Mideast Gulf and hosts Iran's main crude and condensate export terminal.

Iranian news agency ILNA quoted a source familiar with the incident as saying the strikes did not target any oil infrastructure. "All oil units and facilities in the region are fully operational," the source said, adding that the attacks were limited to military and defence sites.

Kharg Island has been Iran's primary oil export hub since the early 1960s. Pipelines from major producing areas feed crude to the island, which houses extensive gathering systems, storage tanks and offshore loading facilities.

Tuesday's strikes mark the second time since the war began on 28 February that US forces have targeted military assets on Kharg Island. The first attack, on 13 March, struck more than 90 military sites, including naval mine storage areas and missile bunkers, according to US Central Command, which oversees US forces in the region.

US vice-president JD Vance appeared to reference the latest strikes in comments made during a visit to Budapest. He said developments on Kharg Island did not signal a change in US strategy and were consistent with earlier statements by President Donald Trump.

Trump said the US and Israel would avoid targeting Iranian energy infrastructure until a deadline he set for 8pm ET (00:00 GMT) today, unless Tehran agrees to allow safe passage through the strait of Hormuz.

"If the Iranians want to exact a certain amount of pain, the US has the ability to exact much, much greater pain," Vance said. "The president doesn't want to do that. I don't want to do that. That's why we are negotiating so aggressively, but fundamentally the ball is in the Iranians' court."
