The Indian government has approved 145bn rupees ($1.53bn) in viability gap funding (VGF) to support the development of 92GWh of grid-scale energy storage capacity by the April 2030-March 2031 fiscal year, including 30GWh of battery energy storage systems (Bess) and 60GWh of pumped hydro storage.

The scheme, approved on 4 November, will provide financial support during 2026-27 fiscal year to 2030-31 fiscal year and aims to accelerate the deployment of energy storage infrastructure across the country.

The planned capacity also includes 2GWh from alternative energy storage technologies. The projects are expected to attract total investment of Rs976bn, according to the government statement.

The government will allocate storage capacity through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. Public and private sector electricity distribution companies will be eligible for VGF support for Bess and pumped hydro storage projects, while projects based on alternative storage technologies will be implemented by public and private sector entities.

Bess projects under the scheme will be subject to a minimum domestic content requirement (DCR) of 40pc, aimed at promoting indigenous manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported components.

The scheme is intended to support greater integration of renewable energy into India's electricity grid, improve grid stability and address the variability of renewable power generation.

The 92GWh of planned capacity would represent 170pc of the country's present grid-scale energy storage capacity and contribute towards meeting a requirement of 411GWh by the 2031-32 fiscal year.

The approval comes as India moves to improve storage requirements for renewable energy projects. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has proposed mandatory co-located energy storage systems for new ground-mounted solar and onshore wind projects commissioned from July 2027, with minimum storage duration requirements increasing to four hours from July 2029.
