Houston, 9 May (Argus) — Northern Plains Nitrogen (NPN) today picked a site near Grand Forks, North Dakota, to build and operate a $1.5bn nitrogen fertilizer plant.

The proposed plant is expected to produce about 2,200st/day of ammonia using about 80,000 mmBtu/day of natural gas. The plant will also feature urea and UAN production facilities which it will use to create more than 1mn st of shippable products, the company said.

“We plan to convert most of the ammonia to urea and or UAN,” said Darin Anderson, president of NPN's board of directors. “Our goal is to have the company be as flexible as possible so we want the ability to produce what growers need.”

The plant is expected to be completed and begin producing fertilizer by the 2017 growing season and will target markets in the north central US as well as southern portions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
