CF shuts Medicine Hat plant in advance of floods

Houston, 24 June (Argus) — CF Industries has shut its Medicine Hat, Alberta, nitrogen fertilizer complex as floods threaten the region.

The company shut down the complex's two ammonia plants on 21 June in anticipation of high water from the South Saskatchewan river today. Medicine Hat's urea plant was already down for maintenance. CF Industries was unable to provide an estimated plant restart date.

The Medicine Hat complex, Canada's largest nitrogen production facility, features two ammonia plants, each with production capacity of 1,750st/day. The complex's granular urea plant has production capacity of 2,250st/day.

A phased shut-down is less harmful than an immediate one because potential power outages from flooding can damage equipment.
