Brazil's two main grain-producing states, Mato Grosso and Parana, are nearing the end of the winter corn harvest ahead of schedule, with higherproduction levels expected.

Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (IMEA) says 93.90pc of the area planted for the 2018-19 winter corn crop has already been harvested in the state, up by 13.4 percentage points year-on-year. The center-western state is Brazil's top corn producer.

Parana has harvested 73pc of the sowed area, up from 31pc at the same time last year, says Parana's Department of Rural Economics (DERAL-PR). The southern state is the second-largest producer of grain.

The earlier-than-average corn harvest follows an early start to planting — by up to three-to-four weeks in some regions — thanks to an early harvest of the soybean crop earlier in the year.

Favorable weather conditions during the winter corn crop development, which occurs mainly between February-May, are leading to expectations of a larger crop as well. The Mato Grosso harvest is forecast at 31.1mn metric tonnes (t), up by 12.7pc from last season, while Parana is expected to see a jump of 49pc in its winter corn output to 13.7mn t.

The 2017-18 cycle was marked by a drop on production because of drought, particularly in Parana.

Given the higher supply from Mato Grosso and Parana as well as from other major producing states, such as Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil is expected to see record corn exports this season.

The official agricultural statistics agency Conab's July report forecasts shipments of 33.5mn t in 2018-19, up from less than 24mn t in 2017-18. This would make Brazil the second-largest corn exporter in the world, only behind the US.

Winter corn in Brazil is harvested mid-year and accounts for around two-thirds of the national crop. Combined Parana and Mato Grosso account for 61.7pc of Brazil's total winter corn output.
