The research unit of Chinese state-owned oil firm CNPC sees the country's total crude demand peaking at 730mn t (14.6mn b/d) by 2025 under the ‘2060 carbon neutral scenario' in its latest outlook, compared with a peak of 14.8mn b/d by 2030 under its ‘business as usual' scenario.

Chinese refinery capacity will reach around 1bn t/yr (20mn b/d) by 2025, with oil product yields declining to 45pc from the current level of 62pc, CNPC's Economics and Technology Research Institute (ETRI) said.

ETRI expects aggregate demand for gasoline, diesel and kerosine to peak at 380mn t at 2025. The timescale is in line with the latest forecasts from the research unit of CNPC's counterpart, state-controlled Sinopec, although Sinopec is expecting a lower demand peak at 356mn t.

China's crude demand falls to just 6.2mn b/d by 2050 in ETRI's carbon neutral scenario. Petrochemical demand accounts for 47.5pc of crude use by then, compared with 18.7pc in 2020.

Chinese president Xi Jinping has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and for the country's emissions to peak before 2030.

CNPC, the parent company of state-controlled PetroChina, is the country's biggest oil and gas producer.
