Aramco Trading, Australia’s United sign fuel deal

Privately owned Australian fuel retailer United Petroleum has signed a non-binding initial agreement with the trading arm of state-controlled Saudi Aramco covering potential long-term fuel supply, product storage and other business opportunities.

Aramco Trading (ATC) intends to explore the sale and supply of refined fuels to United Petroleum to meet demand in its network of facilities in Australia and elsewhere, ATC said.

The agreement comes at a time when the Australian transport fuel market is undergoing a structural change following the closure of two refineries this year, leaving two operating refineries that have a nameplate capacity to meet about one-quarter of Australia's fuel demand of around 1mn b/d.

United Petroleum has less than 10pc of Australia's retail fuel market, behind Australia-listed refiners and marketers Ampol and Viva, as well as BP and retail fuel networks operated by Australian supermarket chain Coles and UK fuel retailer EG.

Aramco and its affiliates have little presence in the Australian energy market, although it has Australian national Andrew Liveris on its board of directors.
