Opec ups Russia supply, Chinese demand forecasts again

  • Mercados: Crude oil
  • 12/10/23

Opec has revised up its forecast for Russian liquids supply this year, for a third month in a row, and upgraded its forecast for Chinese demand growth to well above 1mn b/d. But its global oil demand growth projections for 2023 and 2024 remain unchanged.

The group's latest Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR), published today, sees non-Opec liquids supply rising by 1.68mn b/d this year, compared with a 1.58mn b/d increase in last month's forecast. The revision was mainly driven by upgrades to Russian, US and Brazilian supply, which were partly offset by downward revisions from Norway, UK and Azerbaijan.

Opec expects sanctions-hit Russia to produce 10.53mn b/d of liquids in 2023, 80,000 b/d higher than last month's projection. It forecasts Russian supply will remain at 10.53mn b/d next year.

Opec+ members Russia and Saudi Arabia today reaffirmed their commitments to stick with voluntary crude supply cuts until the end of the year, which include a 300,000 b/d export cut from Russia and a 1mn b/d additional output cut from Saudi Arabia.

Opec sees non-Opec supply growth at 1.38mn b/d in 2024, unchanged from last month.

While the group kept its 2023 global oil demand growth forecast unchanged at 2.44mn b/d, it revised up its forecast for Chinese growth by an additional 100,000 b/d to 1.07mn b/d. This was mainly offset by lower growth projections for Africa, parts of Asia and the US.

Opec kept its oil demand growth forecast for 2024 at 2.25mn b/d. This is more than double that of the IEA, which today lowered its 2024 projection by 110,000 b/d to 880,000 b/d.

Opec's call on its members' crude production for this year was revised down by 100,000 b/d to 29.13mn b/d. The call for 2024 was revised down by 90,000 b/d to 29.93mn b/d. The group produced 27.76mn b/d of crude last month, up by around 280,000 b/d compared to August, according to an average of secondary sources which includes Argus.
