Australian grain harvest ahead of schedule

Australian grain receipts ramped up at the country's three main grain aggregators CBH, GrainCorp and Viterra, as the season starts ahead of the typical harvest period.

Western Australian grain harvest deliveries into CBH's network for the October 2023 to January 2024 harvest season totalled over 5mn t, with the CBH network receiving over 2mn t for the week ending 12 November.

Winter crop harvest activity was now mostly complete in Queensland, with receipts in the GrainCorp network still trickling into the Goondiwindi region and slowing around the Burren Junction, Moree and Narrabri regions in northern New South Wales (NSW). GrainCorp reported overall quality across all commodities has been excellent.

Harvest activity in central and southern NSW continued to pick up pace, with GrainCorp sites receiving canola, barley and wheat, although rainfall over the latter half of last week temporarily slowed receival activity. Harvest activity is under way in most regions in Victoria as they experience warmer weather.

Deliveries into the Viterra network ramped up during the week with growers delivering over 1mn t for the week ending 12 November, taking total receipts for the season to almost 2.5mn t, with wheat making up just over half of total commodities received, according to Viterra delivery reports. It has been one of the earliest starts to the season, with growers harvesting 2-4 weeks ahead of a typical harvest, Viterra's general manager for operations Gavin Cavanagh said.

Viterra loaded the first vessel of the season at Port Lincoln this week, loaded with barley bound for China. The shipment of 66,000t of barley kicks off the 6.3mn t of shipping booked for the Viterra network. The 66,000t barley vessel is also the first new season export of South Australian (SA) growers' grain into China, Viterra's general manager of supply chain Derek Robjohns said, following the recent removal of the tariff on Australian barley exports. The tariff removals on SA barley will be beneficial for growers in the region that produce high-quality malting barley that are prime for export.
