US-based critical materials manufacturer Elmet Technologies, a subsidiary of the Elmet Group, was awarded a $36mn contract from the US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), the company said today.

Under the terms of the contract, Elmet will supply molybdenum and tungsten alloys, including titanium-zirconium-molybdenum (TZM) alloy billets, bar stock and ingots to the DLA for the national defense stockpile (NDS), according to the company. Elmet will also supply molybdenum and tungsten precision wire to the NDS.

These alloys and wires are utilized in several aerospace applications, including jet engine components.

Elmet's award follows a separate contract from the agency earlier this month worth up to $2bn to supply the DLA with tungsten ores, concentrates and sodium tungstate for the NDS.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) is also investing $450mn into Elmet in efforts to strengthen domestic tungsten capacity, particularly for defense purposes. Elmet expects to use approximately $165mn of the DOD funding to expand its manufacturing capacity at its Maine, Michigan and Ohio facilities.
