US drivers in February recorded the highest number of vehicle miles traveled since records began in 1991, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHA).
The month saw a seasonal decline from January but also recorded the highest cumulative miles for the first two months in the history of FHA data.
Drivers traveled 232.2bn miles in February, a 5.6pc increase from February 2015 and a 3.5pc decrease from January.
Vehicle miles traveled serve as a proxy for gasoline demand. The Energy Information Administration has reported robust implied demand through the first three months of the year, though analysts have questioned whether the early data reflects strong domestic or export consumption.
