Australia-based Talison Lithium is building a new bulk storage facility for lithium concentrate exports at the West Australian (WA) port of Bunbury.

The 50,000t facility will be linked to the expansion of lithium concentrate production at its Greenbushes hard rock lithium mine and is expected to be completed in October next year.

Talison is expanding its lithium concentrate production capacity by 520,000 t/yr to around 1.3mn t/yr with the output increase expected in 2020. It is also considering a further expansion that will become operational in 2022 if it goes ahead.

Talison is a joint venture between China's Tianqi Lithium and US-based Albermarle, which is building a lithium hydroxide plant at WA's Kwinana, near Perth. Albermarle is also considering building a hydroxide plant further down the southern coast of WA.

Talison also has lithium brine operations in Chile.
