ExxonMobil has introduced International Maritime Organization (IMO) compliant 0.5pc sulphur marine fuels.

The company will make the fuels available in the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam, Genoa, Marseilles, Singapore and Laem Chabang. The fuels will be compatible with one another so long as proper procedures for storage and handling are followed, the company said in a press release. The fuels will meet International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 2017 specifications.

ISO has not yet set a standard for the new 0.5pc sulphur marine fuel. An ISO specification draft is expected to be finalized by the end of September. The industry expects the 0.5pc sulphur bunker specifications to be kept in line with current specifications with the exception of sulphur content. The ISO could also include an annex on fuel stability and compatibility.
