Gevo, Praj to develop biojet technology in India

US renewable fuels producer Gevo and biofuel technology provider Praj Industries will partner to enable refineries in India and neighbouring countries to produce biojet and renewable gasoline.

The two companies will combine their technology and plant equipment to produce renewable isobutanol made from feedstock such as cane juice, straws and bagasse at sugar mills and ethanol plants.

Renewable isobutanol can be then converted into biojet or renewable gasoline. The biojet will be used in commercial aviation and by the Indian defense sector.

Gevo did not comment on potential biojet production volumes or detail how many plants or refineries are planned to be equipped with the technology.

The partnership will help India in achieving energy security, reducing imports and meeting climate change goals, Pramod Chaudhari, executive chairman at Praj Industries said.

India has a 10pc ethanol-blending target by 2022 and a 20pc goal for 2030. Indian refiners need over 4bn l of ethanol to hit the 10pc blending target. To increase domestic production, the Indian government has approved hundreds of new plants at sugar mills to add 5.5bn l in capacity. But depending on sugar mills, many of which lack financing, to increase ethanol output is a risk because of volatility in sugar production, which in turn hurts the finances of mills and production of ethanol.
