Hong Kong ease Covid-19 restrictions on bunkering

Hong Kong lifted from yesterday its earlier Covid-19 restrictions requesting vessels to be quarantined for 14 days when they call at the port for bunkering operations at outer port limits, according to bunker suppliers.

Hong Kong bunker sales diverted to south China because of the quarantine policy are expected to return, although South China bunker suppliers said there is no immediate impact as yet. This will potentially lift Hong Kong's bunker sales, which were estimated to have fallen by 14pc from a year earlier to 5.7mn t in 2020 because of supply diversions to south China.

Vessels operating in international waters in southeast Asia normally prefer to bunker in Hong Kong rather than south China's Guangzhou and Shenzhen because Hong Kong's very-low sulphur fuel oil prices are normally lower by $10-20/t.

Port congestion in south China may also accelerate resuming bunker sales in Hong Kong. Chiwan, Shekou, Yantian ports in Shenzhen city and Nansha port in Guangzhou are still facing strict Covid-19 quarantine measurements that are slowing down vessel anchorage and bunkering efficiency, south China bunker suppliers said today.
