  • Märkte: Petrochemicals
  • 07.07.21

Thai petrochemical producer Indorama plans to launch a 1.92bn bottle/yr polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant in west Java's Karawang by 2023. It will turn used plastic bottles into PET flakes, which can be used as feedstock to produce recycled plastic resin that is of food-safe grade.

The firm aims to recycle around 2bn PET bottles as part of its commitment to divert used plastic bottles from waste. Indorama's recycling efforts support the Indonesian government's plans to reduce marine plastic waste, which aims to reduce this waste up to 70pc by 2025.

The Karawang recycling plant will bring Indorama closer to achieving its target of recycling a minimum of 750,000t/yr of PET globally by 2025, which it has set aside $1.5bn for.

Indorama owns six other petrochemicals production sites across Indonesia in Purwakarta, Cilegon, Tangerang and Karawang.
