South Korean petrochemical firm Lotte Chemical has set a target to produce 600,000 t/yr of blue and green hydrogen by 2030.

The company plans to invest 4.4 trillion won ($3.8bn) in its hydrogen operations by the end of this decade. It has set a production target of 160,000 t/yr of blue hydrogen by 2025 compared with current output of 300,000 t/yr of grey hydrogen from its refinery, petrochemical and steel production operations.

Green hydrogen is made by using clean electricity from renewable energy technology with no emissions, while blue hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels but with carbon emissions being captured, stored or reused. Grey hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels with no emissions captured.

Lotte Chemical is targeting sales of W3 trillion/yr by 2030 from hydrogen fuel cells, fuelling stations and storage tank operations. It plans to have 200 hydrogen fuelling stations operational by then, as well as commercial production of 500,000 hydrogen storage tanks each year.

The company, which has already set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, is aiming for its "green business" — which also includes battery materials, chemical recycling and eco-friendly plastics — to account for 20pc of company revenues by the end of this decade, up from 4pc now. The share of its commodity chemical business is projected to fall to 40pc from 60pc over the same period.
