Integrated steelmaker US Steel is taking a 1.36mn short ton/yr blast furnace off line for 38 days at its Gary Works mill in Indiana this fall.
The outage at the No. 6 blast furnace will start on 30 September.
It is the latest multi-week outage that would crimp supply in the US steel market, which has been undersupplied for months.
Integrated steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs will undergo maintenance for 45-60 days at its 4.63mn st/yr Indiana Harbor No. 7 blast furnace and electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor will close its 1.6mn st/yr Gallatin, Kentucky, flat-rolled mill for about a month starting at the end of November.
The Argus US hot-rolled coil (HRC) Midwest ex-works assessment has increased by 90pc in 2021 to $1,900/st on 10 August.
