Japanese petrochemical producer Mitsui Chemicals has signed a patent license agreement of bio-polyester with fellow petrochemical firm Mitsubishi Chemical.
The agreement enables Mitsui Chemicals to manufacture and sell bio-polyester including polyethylene terephthalate (PET) made from biomass. The company decided to acquire the agreement as it identified potential demand for the product in light of the 2050 decarbonisation goal. Mitsui Chemicals will mull producing bio-PET at its Iwakuni Otake petrochemical complex in Japan's southern Yamaguchi prefecture by using bio-monoethylene glycol.
The company has attempted to promote decarbonisation and chemical recycling by importing bio-naphtha from Neste to manufacture bio-petrochemical products and cooperating with the US' PureCycle Technologies to develop a recycled polypropylene business.
