Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Line (Mol) and trading firm Trafigura will explore establishing a regular biodiesel supply as a marine fuel for chemical tankers.

Mol, Mol's wholly-owned subsidiary Mol Chemical Tankers (Molct), Trafigura and Trafigura's bunker supplier TFG Marine have signed an agreement to conduct a joint study on biodiesel bunker supply, with the aim to provide regular deliveries to Molct's chemical tanker fleet. It was not disclosed when the agreement was signed.

The bunker ports could be Singapore, Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) and the US Gulf coast, as the fleet is operated in the region, Mol said.

The companies in March completed a trial use of biodiesel that was produced from palm oil. TFG Marine supplied 200t of biodiesel to Molct's operating chemical tanker Niseko Galaxy at the Netherlands port of Rotterdam, on a voyage to the US Gulf coast.

CO2 emissions are expected to be reduced by 25-30pc by blending the biodiesel with a ratio of 30pc into conventional marine fuel, and utilising existing marine engines, Mol said.

Mol set out its updated environmental strategy last year to accelerate the use of alternative marine fuels in its fleet and reduce CO2 emissions as part of its aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company is planning to use more biodiesel in its fleet, while utilising existing equipment.
