Uruguay-based biofuel producer Alcoholes del Uruguay has exported a 4,000t shipment of canola-based biodiesel — essentially rapeseed methyl ester (RME) — to Europe, the company said.
The product was produced at the company's Capurro plant in the capital Montevideo, which has production capacity of 62mn l/yr and utilises a range of feedstocks including used cooking oil, tallow and vegetable oil.
Last year, the EU imported just over 4,000t of biodiesel from Uruguay with most of this arriving in April and all of it landing in the Netherlands, according to Eurostat data.
Alongside Uruguay and Argentina — still the primary exporter of biodiesel to Europe from South America — Brazil has also been looking to increase shipments to the EU. The country's largest producer Bsbios acquired a plant in Switzerland last year with the aim of expanding its footprint on the continent.
