India's full electric vehicle (EV) sales surged to an all-time high in the April 2022-March 2023 fiscal year as well as to a monthly high in March.

India's EV sales rose to nearly 1.18mn units in 2022-23, up by over 1½ times from 457,006 units in 2021-22 and crossing the 1mn mark for the first time, according to the government's Vahan database. Sales also rose to 140,135 units in March, higher by 31pc from a month earlier and by 69pc from a year earlier.

Electric two-wheelers continued to comprise the majority of EV sales in 2022-23, including March. Electric two-wheelers comprised nearly 62pc of all EV sales in 2022-23 at 727,176 units, up from 55pc or 252,555 units in 2021-22. The category comprised over 61pc of all EV sales in March at 86,067 units, compared to 62pc or 66,003 units a month earlier, with year-earlier data not available.

India also recorded EV sales at 41,419 units from 1-12 April, according to Vahan data.

The Indian government allocated 51.72bn rupees ($626mn) for the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (Fame 2) scheme in its budget for the April 2023-March 2024 fiscal year, up by nearly 80pc from Rs28.98bn during 2022-23. The government also exempts imports of capital goods and machinery required for the production of lithium-ion cells from customs duty.

The government had launched the Fame scheme under the National Electric Mobility Mission in 2015 to provide financial support for the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles. The Fame 2 programme was initially introduced for a period of three years from 2019 at a cost of Rs100bn, and supports the electrification of public transport, as well as the installation of EV charging points across the country.

India's EV sales in March accounted for 6.8pc of all vehicle sales in the month, up from 6pc in February and 4.6pc in March 2022. India's government plans for EVs to account for 30pc of the country's automotive sales by 2030, while aiming to boost EV infrastructure in part through its product-linked incentives scheme for battery manufacturing.
