UK-Australian mining firm Rio Tinto has restarted deliveries of iron ore to its 140mn t/yr Dampier port in the Pilbara region of Western Australia (WA) following a train derailment on 17 June.

Cleanup operations following the accident and speed restrictions continue to disrupt delivery schedules, but the track is clear and the first train used the line on the night of 20-21 June.

Around 30 wagons derailed at 6.30pm Australian Western Standard Time (10:30 GMT) on 17 June about 20km outside Dampier port. The train was in autonomous mode and there were no injuries.

The derailment followed a strong shipping week for Rio Tinto that contributed to a WA iron ore shipments hitting a three-week high in the week to 17 June.
