Japan's state-owned energy agency Jogmec and the country's upstream firm Japex will work with Indonesian state-controlled firms to explore injecting CO2 into the Sukowati oil field in east Java, Indonesia.
Jogmec and Japex will collaborate with Indonesian state-controlled oil firm Pertamina and its upstream unit Pertamina EP (PEP), following a joint study agreement the four parties signed on 25 July. The agreement aims to demonstrate and verify the effectiveness of CO2 injection, CO2-enhanced oil recovery and CO2 underground storage through a field test.
The latest deal is also aimed to leverage experience gained from a similar CO2 injection field test being conducted by Jogmec, Pertamina and PEP at the Jatibarang field in west Jawa since August 2022.
Japex has already cooperated with Pertamina, as well as Lemigas — a research and development centre for oil and gas technology in Indonesia — to carry out a feasibility study for a carbon capture, utilisation and storage project at the Sukowati oil field since 2021, using the joint crediting mechanism (JCM).
