Queensland state government-owned CS Energy has signed a deal with US firm General Electric's energy spin-off GE Vernova to supply hydrogen-ready peaking generation units for its new 400MW Brigalow gas-fired peaking power plant.

The plant will consist of 12 GE aeroderivative turbines with a capacity of 33MW per unit, designed to operate on up to 35pc hydrogen-blended gas, to be built at CS Energy's Kogan clean energy hub, next to the 750MW Kogan coal-fired power plant.

The hydrogen will initially come from CS Energy's 1MW Kogan renewable hydrogen demonstration plant, the Queensland government said, ahead of proposed development of a commercial-scale production facility at the hub.

The power station is expected to be completed in 2026, subject to approvals, with planning and environmental applications to be submitted in late 2023.

Coal-dependent Queensland, which is also a major exporter of the commodity, is aiming for a renewable energy target of 70pc by 2032 and ending its reliance on coal-fired power by 2035.

Queensland also announced A$21mn ($13.5mn) in grants will be available for companies to carry out gas exploration in the central Bowen and Galilee basins. The Frontier Gas grants programme aims to bolster gas resources available for the east coast Australian market, which is forecast to suffer a future deficit, with LNG import terminals being considered.

Queensland produces about a third of Australia's domestic gas supplies, a figure expected to grow as output falls further in Victoria and South Australia states. Queensland's Gladstone hosts three of the nation's 10 LNG projects, the 9mn t/yr Australia Pacific LNG, 7.8mn t/yr Gladstone LNG and the 8.5mn t/yr Queensland Curtis LNG.
