Indian fertilizer producer Iffco has signed an initial deal with domestic renewables firm Acme for the purchase and supply of around 200,000t of ammonia produced by renewable energy.

The ammonia will be produced at Acme's Odisha green ammonia project, which will have a total production capacity of around 1.3mn t/yr of renewable ammonia when fully developed.

Ammonia is usually used as a feedstock for phosphate fertilizer production like DAP, which is produced through the reaction of phosphoric acid with ammonia under controlled conditions. The green ammonia will likely be used for the manufacturing of complex fertilizers at Iffco's 1.9mn t/yr DAP Paradip plant and its 1.2mn t/yr DAP/NPK Kandla plant in Gujarat.

Acme will also retain a green credit in the form of an Internationally Transferable Mitigation Outcomes (ITMO) under Article 6 of the UN's Paris climate agreement. ITMOs can be traded under a bilateral agreement with another country to meet climate targets.

The initiative is a significant step towards sustainable agriculture and renewable energy use in India, said Iffco's managing director Udai Shanker Awasthi. It is also in line with the country's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for production, use and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
